Description: HYDROGRAPHY_BANK_FULL_WIDTH_NHD_INwaspreparedtosupporttheIndianaFluvialErosionHazard(FEH)MitigationProgram.TheFEHprogramisfocusedprimarilyonerosionthatoccursduetothelateralmovementofstreams.Theprocessofmovingacrossavalleybottomischaracteristicofalluvialstreams,orstreamsthatbuildfloodplains.Asthesestreamsmove,ormeanderacrossthevalleybottomtheyerodeanddepositsedimentinaseriesofalternatingcutbanksandpointbars.Ifastreamisgiventheroomthatitneedstomakethelateraladjustmentsthatarerequiredbyfluctuationsinstreamflowandsedimentsupply,mosterosionhazardscanbeavoided.Afundamentalconceptwithinthefieldoffluvialgeomorphologystatesthat,asonemovesdownstreamwithinawatershed,thereisapredictableandquantifiablerateofincreaseinbank full-channeldimensions.TheUSGSandCEEScollecteddataat82studysitestoidentifybankfullstage,determinethedimensionsofbankfullwidth,meandepth,andcross-sectionalarea,anddocumentchannelgeometrycharacteristicsthatallowfordeterminationsofchannelclassification.Fromthesedata,regionalchannel-dimensionequationsweredevelopedforthethreelargestphysiographicregionsofIndiana—theNorthernMoraineandLakeregion,CentralTillPlainregion,andSouthernHillsandLowlandsregion.GISanalysesusedtheseequationstocalculateavoidancezonesbasedonbankfullwidth.ThetoolsanddetailsoftheFEHprogramcanbefoundathttp://feh.iupui.edu/For Mobile and Non-Mobile streams, a GIS analysis algorithm generated bankfull width values for each stream segment based on drainage area within the physiographic region. The analysis also used these values to create buffer zones of at least 100 feet or 3X bankfull width. For Mobile streams GIS generated an 8X bankfull width buffer which was manually edited and adjusted to reflect the digital elevation model and stream meander evidence.
